House of SpeakEasy remembers with deep affection Xanthe Barton, whose warm charm, elegant grace, and love of literature and language touched everyone she met.
Privately, she was also a talented poet.
Xanthe was passionate about House of SpeakEasy’s mission — not just because she was such an avid reader herself, but also because she felt that books were an essential part of life. She was a keen volunteer, notably at our past two SpeakEasy galas where she greeted guests with her characteristic poise and quiet humor.
Xanthe had a gift for making people feel seen and heard — the kind of generosity that is the true spirit of SpeakEasy.
On the day she flew back to London this October, she made a point of coming to our Seriously Entertaining evening at Joe’s Pub first.
It was her world: one of literary creativity, sharp observations and endless curiosity.
In her honor, we are establishing The Xanthe Barton Poetry Program — a series that will nurture new voices and bring poetry to young people to enjoy and explore for themselves.
Through this program, Xanthe’s love of words will continue to open doors, spark imagination, and share the power of poetry with all.
